Signature Quilts: An Appreciation

WE MISS YOU, one of our Signature Quilts tells those whose names are written in colored pen, then stitched over in matching embroidery thread by our wonderful volunteers, this one by Andeya Garcia.

Andeya and our other embroiderers, including Tairay Skolnick and the mother-daughter team of Mikke and Allison Bitten, spend countless hours on each panel to commemorate those lost to AIDS.

Quilt Project volunteers created the idea of the interactive Signature Quilt panels in the 1990s, and brought them back when QPGC was formed. The Signature Quilts are perfect for those who want to remember their lost loved one, but do not have the time or resources to design, produce or commission a full 3×6-foot panel.

Since Quilt Project Gold Coast was formed in 2018, about a half-dozen Signature Quilts have been made, including special panels designed for the now-defunct AIDS LifeCycle, with Boardmember Marc Goldman creating a unique patchwork for one of the Quilts.

Some people commemorate their lost loved ones with a name and date, while others choose to write a loving message to express their grief. Signature Quilts provide a crucial link for the AIDS community in expanding the amount of names to be remembered, and honoring those lost to complications from the AIDS virus.
